Visiting Perth and the Caversham Wildlife Park

Perth is a city which is often overlooked by visitors due to its isolated location in Western Australia. If you have gotten tired of traveling to touristy places like Sydney and Melbourne, you should definitely consider a trip to Western Australia. I have two trips here so far and hopefully, I’ll have another chance in the future. I thought I had seen just about everything there was to see after my first couple weeks in Perth, but it turns out I was wrong. I had planned to spend most of my trip visiting other destinations in Western Australia, luckily I saved a few days for exploration around Perth.

One of the highly recommended attractions in the area is the Caversham Wildlife Park. At first, I was hesitant about going since all zoos tend to be the same, at least in my opinion. I was talked into going this time around and I decided to read up on the park before I went. Something that piqued my interest was …… the park is privately owned and funded. The price of admission is $27 for an adult (as well as revenue from the gift shop), is enough to pay for animal feed and operational costs to keep the park running. The Caversham Wildlife Park offers a number of shows in addition to their animal exhibits. Admission to all of the shows is included in the price of admission.

Entering the Caversham Wildlife Park

After paying the entrance fee, I was given a map of the park with my ticket. The staff at the gate informed me that the next chance to meet the koalas was coming up soon. I had just enough time to navigate through the park and jump in line. The line was a bit long but guests were moved through after a couple of photos to make room for the next group of people. The line moved fairly quickly and a couple of park staff entertained us with facts about koalas and Australia in general. When we reached the photo area we got to pet a koala as well as take a photo with another koala. It was a bit hurried, but with so many people wanting to pet them and take a photo I can’t complain.

As we walked around the park we came across the farm animal show. We jumped into our seats just in time to see a group of children feeding lambs from baby bottles. At the end of the various demonstrations, we were given the chance to milk a cow. The last time I did this I was around 10 years old so it was fun to try it again. There was also a photo opportunity with a freshly sheared sheep. We didn’t get to see the shearing because we were a bit late to the show. If you want to see that part of the show I would recommend arriving early.

The park is fairly compact but does contain a nice assortment of Australian wildlife. A nice feature is the kangaroo petting and feeding area. A large section of the park is home to dozens of kangaroo that run freely around. A bin of feed is available at the entrance and guests are encouraged to hand feed Australia’s most famous marsupial. This is a good chance to get up close and personal with the animals. Another interesting thing was that a number of the females had baby joeys in their pouch. They could be seen poking their legs or head out of the pouch from time to time.

The last thing we did at the Caversham Wildlife Park was to see the ‘Wombat and Friends’ show. For me, this was the highlight of the day. I had never encountered a wombat up close and personal before this trip. I was pretty happy to be able to pet the wombat and learn more about it habits.

Overall, I would say the park is quite well-organized and maintained. The animal attendants are knowledgeable, and the various shows offered throughout the day are enough to keep you busy and entertained.
