Abseiling in Kalbarri National Park: Visiting Z Bend and The Loop

Kalbarri National Park is a remarkable destination in Western Australia with a lot to offer. The park is a good 300 miles north of Perth in Western Australia. The park has many hiking trails which you can go out and explore. The city of Kalbarri is fairly small, they have a grocery store and some delicious restaurants but don’t expect to find the chain stores you are used to. The hotel I stayed in was close to the beach and came with a living area and kitchen. I planned to cook a couple of meals while I was there like I did at Shark Bay. Unfortunately, there was a shop with delicious fish n chips, so that’s where I went most of the time. I’m usually drawn to fish n chips or Greek food when I travel because it’s hard to find them in Taiwan.

Another way to make the most of your trip to Kalbarri is to join one of the many tour groups in the area that offer tours daily. On my first day in Kalbarri, I went to the visitor center and booked a spot on the abseiling in Kalbarri excursion. The package included transportation Kalbarri National Park and 5 trips down the ropes.

If you haven’t tried abseiling before it’s basically rappelling down the side of a cliff. It’s comparable to self-belay if you have been rock climbing before. Our tour took us to the inland part of the national park, roughly 30 minutes away from the town. When we arrived at Z-Bend we were taken to a scenic spot where we could take photos of the river gorge. After a short walk, we came to the cliffs and were given our abseiling instructions. The ropes were set up on the cliffs at heights of 25m and 35m. They gave us the option to start off on a 5m wall but everyone agreed that we would rather jump into things with the 25m cliff.

The next day we drove into the park again but this time we went to The Loop, the spot famous for Natures window. It’s important to remember the road you take to get to ‘The Loop’ or ‘Z Bend’ is a dirt road and quite bumpy. We drove to The Loop in a rented SUV and ended up with a cracked windscreen. The rental company charged us for the repairs although the insurance is supposedly going to reimburse us at some point.

There was a lot of parking available when we got to The Loop. The hiking trails are pretty straight forward and give you a good view of the cliffs and gorge. There are many scenic spots to stop for a photo so make sure you bring your camera! It seems everyone who goes to Kalbarri National Park goes for the same reason, to take pictures at Natures Window. This famous rock formation is a 10 minute from the parking area (although it depends on how many pictures you take along the way). We noticed many people turned back to leave after taking photos of the main attraction. Continuing along the cliff provides hikers with additional photo opportunities and the chance to take in the picturesque views.
