It’s hard to believe that it’s been 3 months since our last travel update!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During this time we have been busy having countless adventures around the Balkans. When finished our 4-month Balkan tour will have taken us to every country in the Balkans with the exception of Romania. Don’t worry, we will make a separate trip to Romania<\/a><\/strong><\/em> when we have enough time to devote to the country – there are just too many things to see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our Balkan tour started in late September after our trip around Italy. The first country we saw was Greece, although our time was only spent in the capital. We had originally planned on spending some time on the islands but ended up deciding to spend a week in Athens, Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next stop was Sofia, Bulgaria where we enjoyed a 2-week stay in an amazing apartment that we found on Airbnb. Bulgaria is such a beautiful country and set a good tone for the rest of our trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nis, Serbia. We spent a week in Nis and all I have to say is that the grilled meat is amazing! Nis is pretty cheap compared to Athens and Sofia and we definitely ate a lot while we were here. Getting into Serbia was an interesting experience for Corina as Taiwanese citizens are in a difficult position when traveling to Serbia. The official policy is that Taiwanese citizens don’t need a visa<\/em> to enter Serbia. However, when confirming with the Serbian embassy in Sofia we were informed that Taiwanese need to register for approval before being granted entry. This approval form required us to make 3 trips to the Serbian embassy as they kept finding more required documents for us to supply. The funniest part is the “not a visa” form had the title “Serbian Entry Visa Form”. It also cost 60 Euro – the same price as a standard visa. But hey, at least we got in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our next stop was Skopje, Macedonia. Skopje was a very contrasting city, the city center was very modern with impressive architecture, while the rest of the city was pretty rough with lots of poverty. Our feelings about Macedonia were mixed, and we left feeling uncomfortable with the levels of economic disparity we saw here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After Skopje, we headed to Pristina, Kosovo. Our Airbnb here was the best accommodation we have had this who trip – except for our stay at the Sheraton in Taipei when we kicked off this 1-year honeymoon. If anyone is headed to Pristina I can provide the info for this place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tirana, Albania has been Corina’s favorite place so far. She thinks that Tirana is a great place to live or spend an extended amount of time – our 1-week stay was not enough apparently! The people are friendly, the food is good, and it’s a good place to go with kids. Nearly every restaurant we went to gave us something for free. Either food to sample, deserts, or drinks like Rakje a local wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our next stop was Montenegro where we visited Podgorica, Budva, and Kotor. Montenegro is one of the best, if not the best, places I have ever been to.\u00a0 The weather is perfect, the country is so full\u00a0of natural beauty, and every city was uncrowded with either residents\u00a0or tourists. This last part might be due to our off-season visit, or all the tourists might have been farther north in Croatia. We will be making a return visit soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n We finally made it to Croatia! Our first stop was Dubrovnik – which was very expensive compared to the rest of our stops around the Balkans. We stayed in the center of the old walled city and spent our days walking around the old streets. Our apartment was in a ~500-year-old building and it made our stay very special. The only downside is that our visit came at the same time as a big storm. We still had a great time, but we had to change out of our wet clothes three times a day! Next up was Split, a very beautiful city with a lot to see and do. We spent a week in Split and thoroughly\u00a0explored the city and hiked in the hills surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Next,\u00a0we headed to the Herzegovina part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We stayed in Mostar for a week and used this time to explore the surrounding area. Cities like Blagaj and Pocitelj are easily reachable by bus and I definitely recommend checking them out. We joined up with a tour to see the Kravica waterfall. It is spectacular in the winter and is absolutely massive with all of the winter rains. The waterfall is not quite as impressive in the summer, but you can swim around in the water – so it is a trade-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are currently in Sarajevo and are getting our first taste of truly cold weather! We haven’t seen snow yet, but the temperature is below freezing and there are daily snow warnings. On the bus to Sarajevo, there was a ton of snow blanketing everything so I’m sure we will see our first snowfall soon! People here are the least friendly of any place we have visited so far, and many people have told us that that is ‘just Bosnia’ so we aren’t sure what to make of it. We will be here for another 4 days and still have a lot to see and do here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 4 days we will head to the Bosnian cities of Donji Vakuf and later to Jajce. Christmas and the New Year will be spent in Zagreb which many people list as the best place to experience Christmas markets. Then we will head on to Ljubljana, Slovenia before going to Graz, Austria. Our final stop will be back in Vienna where we will catch our flight back to Taipei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last few months have been pretty hectic for me as I have started working for an LA-based startup called MyWanderApp. Trying to balance a busy travel schedule and honeymoon, while at the same time fulfilling work-related duties has left little time to update the blog. I just noticed that the site had an expired SSL certificate for the last 2-weeks so I apologize to anyone who tried to access the site recently<\/em>. I was excited to start work with MyWanderApp for a few reasons. First, the company was founded in 2018 and is pre-launch – which means that I will have the chance to work with the company from the ground up and contribute in a more meaningful way. This might be a bit idealistic, but I believe the input I provide will carry more weight in this type of organization. Second, the company is building a service to help grow Instagram accounts for influencers and micro-influencers. Instagram and Social Media, in general, is something that I am very interested in as it is such a powerful tool in today’s society. And it looks like things will keep expanding! I’ll have a lot more to say about this in the future I’m sure as MyWanderApp will be launching in early 2019. Keep an eye out for that as well as more travel articles that I’ll be writing when time permits. I have a massive backlog of stories, tips, and tricks to share from our travels so hopefully, they will be out soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s hard to believe where our honeymoon has taken us in the past 8 months. And it’s hard to believe that we only have 30 days left before heading back to Taiwan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n We will be moving back to Los Angeles in Spring 2019 I will likely be burnt out with remote work by then anyway <\/em>and plan on settling down somewhat permanently. I would love to spend 2-3 months a year working remotely from places like Costa Rica or Japan, but we will have to see if the job provides this level of flexibility or not. Expect a lot of content to be based on our past travels while the focus changes to travel around the USA<\/p>\n\n\n\n Between February and April\/May (when we move to LA), we will spend some time visiting different cities around Taiwan. We also have plans to visit Korea for a few days as the final trip before leaving Taiwan. There are still a few things I want to do in Taiwan, like climbing Jade mountain, so hopefully, I will have time for it all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n This list includes all the places where we stayed for more than a couple of nights during this long honeymoon.
